AnyDesk is a remote desktop access application founded in 2014 in Stuttgart, Germany by Philipp Weiser, Andreas Mähler, and Olaf Liebe, several of whom had prior experience building remote-access engine technology. Known for its proprietary low-latency DeskRT video codec, AnyDesk has grown to over 145 million downloads and is used by more than 25,000 companies in 190+ countries, including numerous Fortune 500 organizations, backed by growth investors including Insight Partners, EQT, and General Atlantic. In February 2024, AnyDesk disclosed that attackers had compromised its production systems and stolen its code-signing certificate; the company revoked the compromised certificate, rotated credentials, and reset all customer web-portal passwords as a precaution — a significant security incident for a widely deployed remote-access tool.
